Seven days ago...

*A ritual dedicated to Selûne was conducted in the Wood of Sharp Teeth by the Selûnite werewolf pack on the night of the full moon. The spectacle attracted the attention of many observers. While the ritual was mostly successful, the latter half was interrupted by a gnome who had been watching while invisible by casting Darkness on the glowing moonstones. The werewolves promptly tore the intruder to shreds, but rumour floats around that he survived that night...*

Tarina travels to the Woods of Sharp Teeth early in the morning. She searches for some time until she finds a quiet, flat space, and then clears the area of excess flora and digs out a circular pattern in the shape of a spider's web. She places a ring of nine candles around the outer edge of the circle and a bonfire in the center. After lighting each of the candles and the center fire, Tarina sits down before it and sets a drum on her lap. She pricks the tip of her index finger with her dagger and paints a third eye on her forehead with the blood, and then begins to beat a monotonous rhythm with the drum as she stares into the flames of the center fire and enters into a trance.

As she drums, Tarina attempts to connect through her spirit guide with the spirits of the woods around her. She searches for any that might be able to talk to her about the giant spider that has been seen recently prowling the woods, and offers to provide a gift or perform a task for them in exchange for information on the creature. If any spirit appears that seems able to answer and agrees to the proposal, she asks about the spider's origins, its motivations, its powers, its name if it has one, and what offerings or sacrifices it may favor were its spirit to be sought out directly.

An Archdruid of Silvanus and a High Dawnlord of Lathander tread the pathways of the Woods of Sharpteeth together in search of an appropriate place for the copper-haired woman to Commune with Nature about the recent happenings in that forest. With the paladin standing guard over her, she kneels and murmurs prayerfully for the blessings of her patron to give her discernment. Her fingers slip into the yielding, damp earth and she extends herself out, feeling for the information that the woods will give her.

*Berea goes deep within the Woods of Sharpteeth one eve, quite on her own, to a place that she knows well and has encamped many a time. She disrobes and lets down her hair, anointing herself with a curious paste over forehead and heart. In the druidic tongue she prays aloud to her God; sliding down to lie at the foot of the majestic, moss-covered oak before her. A whuffling bear stands guard nearby, prowling the area in watch as the Arch Druidess passes the night in supplication.*

// Berea is undertaking a Silvanite Vigil to receive guidance from her patron about the spider in Sharp Teeth that Eldarian has told her of (attn: DM Ioulaum).

Faiths and Pantheons wrote:
For deeper concerns (a conversation with a servant of the deity, or the receipt of godly favors or magical powers) a Vigil is often employed: The worshiper anoints his or her own body with a powder of crushed acorns and mistletoe leaves mixed with rainwater or spring water and lies down on, or in contact with, a growing tree for most of a night. Some part of the bare flesh of the faithful must touch green, growing moss, so moss-covered giant trees are most favored for use in Vigils.

Near the orc cave territories in the Woods of Sharp Teeth, swaths of dead orcs were sprawled across the ground. Riddled with marks of blade, arrows or fallen in a circle with signs of acid and fire with blademarks across their vulnerable flesh. Signs of a large skirmish were clearly visible over the area.

Candlemarks later an elf in armor and silver cloth returned to the scene of battle, searching among the dead orcs the signs of their tribe, fealty and religion, comparing them to a few she had brought with from the Northern attacks, and those she had considered more native to the forrest.

Amidst their other duties to Candlekeep and elsewhere, Gate Warden Isabella Villame and Acolyte Alexandra Keenan have spent time researching through various tomes and parchments within the famed library in hope of discovering more information about the spider said to lurk within The Wood of Sharp Teeth. The pair have with them a list of parameters to help in their task, and they dutifully devote themselves to the pursuit of answers.

Isabella Villame and Alexandra Keenan, at Candlekeep.

In Candlekeep you may read about the ecology of giant spiders and occasional sightings of Black Widows and other sorts.

On the subject of the Widows not much relevant information is found. You find records on hunting habits (prefers warmblooded prey), records of pack movements near the Spine of the World, suspected mating habits (eating their male spouse), and other details.

What stands out is that Spiders prefer not to move across flat empty plains unless they have no other choice. Records from Luskan indicate that various Uthgard tribes tell tales of Spider migrations during years where deer and other prey are scarce. One record in particular recounts the mighty battle of Ythgra Axehand - who smote the giant creature with her War-axe as it attacked her Tribe's encampment in a valley. It was related that Ythgra took a fortnight to die from its venom afterwards, and ascended to Utghar as one of his shield-maidens.

You don't encounter Knight Errant Belladar Korn. There is no sign of him at Candlekeep during the time you spend there.

Tarina's Trance (I had missed this post, apologies!)

Initially the spirits in the Shapteeth are less than helpful. The rocks and the soil require a herculean effort even to introduce themselves to you, considering themselves beyond mortal affairs. Regardless of your tenacity, however much you choose to apply, no answers are forthcoming from the soil except for remarks about the rainfall (plenty) and the appreciated regularity with which 'things' drop and (slowly) become dirt. You gather that the soil to the south is currently complaining about a period of decreased droppings.

The spirits of animals do not offer insight either. Most are about their own business, only passingly curious at your intrusion into their world. They are not troubled by any spiders, and do not believe you can offer them anything that interest them. The spirit of squirrel did say that he noticed more cobwebs in the north-east of the forest. But measuring real-world direction and distance from the spirit realm is a very difficult task. The squirrel remarked that he might be persuaded to help if you bring him some dryad acorns, to feast on.

After a further period of ongoing reflection and meditation you find a spirit of the forest which offers you another deal. It will tell you all it knows of spiders in the stretch of the Sharpteeth wherein it dwells. In exchange it wishes you to keep a vigil against the defiling of young trees to the south-west, where the land gives way to a great pool water.

Admorin Oakbound, a Druid, is often seen about the eastern part of the Cloakwood working with workers collecting wood for Baldur's gate and other rebuilding. In liaising with these groups he hopes to dissuade unnecessary intrusion and disruption to the balance of that part of the forest. He patrols the area independently negotiating with adventurers, workers and other assorted traffic as his random wanderings take him.

Earlier today, a loud explosion and a brilliant white light filled the Wood of Sharp Teeth, originating from the centre of the forest and spreading outward, staggering anyone caught in the blast to their knees. When the light subsided, a still silence remained. Gradually, noise began to return to the forest again. Now, a serenity not felt in many years has returned to the woods.
