First Name: Aeili
Last Name: Azenci

Appearance:

Aeili is slightly taller than the average elf, but she is very thin, bordering on anorexic. Her cheeks show signs of this gauntness, although the degree of severity of her apparent frailty is determined by the state of her chronic illness which comes and goes. Despite her somewhat sickly appearance she would probably still be considered rather attractive, as elves generally are.

She has tattooing across her forehead and upper cheeks, and while more or less obscure the tattoos just above her cheekbones could be recognised by those in the know as the holy symbol of Corellon Larethian on the right cheek, and Sehanine Moonbow on the left.

Apart from her tattooing she does not seem to have any other obvious decorative ornamentations, earrings, bangles, bracelets etc, except for a necklace with Mystra's holy symbol which is sometimes visible around her neck, at other times concealed inside the folds of her blue and white Mystran vestments, and two rings, one worn on each hand.

Race: Sun Elf
Age: 148
Height 5'7" (170cm)
Weight: 100 lbs (45kg)
Eyes: Emerald-turquoise.
Hair: Long golden blonde.

Personality Profile:

Aeili is a rather temperate and mild-mannered sun elf, although her life experience has lead her in a far different direction than her ancestry-proud parents and kinsfolk. She endeavours to be polite and eloquent in her use of language, sometimes tending towards scholastic intellectualism in the way she approaches conversation, especially regarding the topics of religion and magic.

When she first came to the Sword Coast she was rather naive about human nature and society but her years have helped calm her inner anxiety about living in a foreign land and culture. She is cautious as to whom she trusts, but those who win her confidence will find a helpful and loyal friend and companion in the Mystran priestess. Aeili still has many inner struggles, such as finding love and dealing with her chronic illness, and because of these things she can, at times, come across as emotionally unstable.

Aeili eschews confrontations, violence and overuse of magic, and will prefer to talk her way out of difficulties. If push comes to shove, she will hesitantly use magical enchantments to support her diplomatic efforts and, failing that, she will rely on her innate diviner's 6th sense to judge danger to herself and others and attempt to respond in the most efficient and effective manner, whether it be teleporting away to safety or using True Speak divinations to force an alternate outcome.

General Health: Stable. Excessive indoors study of both the Arcane and Divine Arts has left Aeili with a rather susceptible physical constitution. Unbeknown to her, she suffers from an auto-immune syndrome which will eventually claim her life.
Deity: Mystra
Initial Alignment: Lawful Good
Profession: Priestess of Mystra; Diviner & astrologer.
Base Class & Proposed Development: Wizard (Diviner) + Cleric (Magic & Knowledge Domains)
Habits/Hobbies: Aeili is a keen student of astrology and divination and has a very great interest in studying the prophecies of Alaundo the Seer. She can sometimes be seen wandering around Candlekeep listening to the Chanters. As a Mystran priestess she also has a love of magic and magical creation, especially wands.
Languages: Common, Elven, Arcane, Sylvan, Treant, Draconic, Cormanthan, Netherese, Loross, Celestial, Infernal, Abyssal.
Weapon of Choice: Rarely seen travelling without her Staff of Mystra which functions both as an arcane staff and a priestly holy symbol of her faith.

Background:
Hidden: show
Aeili was born in the year of the Golden Sash, 1203, on the summer solstice (20th of Kythorn) in Leuthilspar, the capital city of Evermeet. Her parents are two proud high-elf nobles: her father an enchanter and her mother a priestess and diviner of Sehanine Moonbow. Aeili thus grew up in a home where she was expected to pursue her parents' love of the Arcane and Divine Arts. Aeili excelled at both, although this lead her to have a somewhat cloistered life spent studying books and practicing magic.

On the turn of Aeili's 117th year she was quietly meditating beside the Fountain of Stars in Leuthilspar when she had a sudden dream. A beautiful human woman surrounded with a blue magical aura approached her and bid her to follow. Aeili stood up and followed her, flitting through the dream world until they came to rest in a Temple in a human city. "You will serve me here," the woman said, smiling softly at Aeili before slowly disappearing. That city, as it turned out, was Baldur's Gate; the temple, Mystra's.

Aeili spent several hours pouring over the dream and what it meant. She dreaded returning home to tell her mother especially, for the proud high elf matron would not appreciate her daughter departing the blessedness of Evermeet for a strange human land. Such was indeed the case, she was severely berated by her mother who warned her very sternly not to obey the dream and to remain in Evermeet.

Aeili remained sullen for the next few weeks, divided between her filial love for her parents and the stirrings in her heart because of her dream. It was the events of 2 Ches, 1321, that changed everything. Zaor Moonflower, the king of Evermeet, was assassinated at the hands of a high-elf extremist who was bent on ursurping the Moon-elf regency and replacing it with a sun-elf dominated Council of Elders. Aeili was utterly disgusted with this plot and sought all the more to leave Evermeet for the mainland.

In the chaos which followed she managed to slip through one of the portals connecting Evermeet to Evereska. After spending some years in Evereska Aeili decided it was time she travelled to the Halfway Inn and joined a merchant caravan headed for Baldur's Gate.

Aeili first arrived in Baldur's Gate in 1345 and immediately joined the church of Mystra there. It was not long before she acquired the attention of the local mage's guild, the Weavemasters, whom she joined as their chaplain. Aeili remained in the city for about a year and a half before word of her talents spread to the Hall of Wonders in Waterdeep. She transferred there and studied under the tutelage of enchanter and assistant priest Ilbrost Mythyl.

Aeili, however, did not get along well with the cruel-minded high priest, Meleghost Starseer. When Meleghost proposed closer ties between the church of Mystra and the Red Magic Enclave in Waterdeep it created an instant rift in the congregation. Aeili was an supporter of Ilbrost's dissenting party but Ilbrost lacked the personal charisma and willpower to dare make an open move against the High Priest of Waterdeep. Dismayed at the indecision, Aeili acquired a transfer back to Baldur's Gate in 1350.

Possible Plot-Hook Ideas

Aeili has drifted a long way from her high-elf parent's haughty pride in their ancestry. This would bring her into immediate conflict with other ancestry-proud elves, with whose opinions she does not always agree.

Aeili is a gifted diviner in both the arcane and divine Art. She regularly receives dreams and visions both from her crystal ball and during her times of reverie.
((DM's feel free to use this as you will))

Aeili has had little conflict with Sharrans, Banites, Red Wizards or other religions/factions which tend to despise the Mystran faith. ((I welcome more interaction both from guilds and DMs in this area - PM me to organise something!))

Misc Facts

As an ordained Mystran priestess, Aeili has access to Weaveglow (signified IG by a ring of blue light, 5ft). She will never reveal this power to any non-Mystran.

She is a former member of the old Weavemasters guild. She still carries her Weavemaster signet ring with her in remembrance of her old allies and friends.

[Update 16/09/2014] Aeili has a miscellaneous quirk: she will often flutter/blink her eyelids repeatedly when stressed, excited or flustered.

[Update 16/09/2014] Aeili has now completed two books on Mystran Dogmatics. They are available for purchase both in Candlekeep and the Shelf of Many Books.

[Update 14/02/2015] Aeili has now completed a 5 volume series on Torilian Astrology. They are available in Candlekeep and the Shelf of Many Books.

[Update 15/03/2015] Aeili is a regular contributor to The Herald, having written sections on astrology, Mystra and the attack on Kheldrivver.

[Update 08/06/2015] Aeili has now completed two more books: one on Mystran Liturgical practices, and another more philosophical work on the relationship between Mystra, magic and morality.

[Update 04/07/2015] Aeili has temporarily departed Baldur's Gate for a safer haven until such time as she deems it appropriate to return.

[Update 14/08/2015] Aeili has now left her association with the Weavemasters in her memory alone. She is trying to settle in to her new home in En Dharasha Everae.

[Update 30/08/2015] After almost a year of thinking about it, Aeili has finally expressed her feelings for Charraj which, to her delight, was reciprocated in kind. Time will tell what Fate has in store for them.

[Update 13/10/2015] Aeili has now completed a 4 part series entitled Lectures on the History of Magic.

[Update 01/12 2015] Every turn of the season Aeili will now roll Constitution, DC 10, to see if she falls ill or her genetic condition returns to regression. Two successive failures will result in her condition beginning to degenerate, and the rolls turning to monthly. A third failure will result in a d100 being rolled to determine the day on which she will pass away. Aeili will recover if she rolls 5 or more above the DC.

Autumn 1351: 19 - Aeili's time away in En Dharasha has indeed been of great health benefit to her. Her condition is improving after having left Baldur's Gate.
Winter 1351: 7 - Aeili does not know it yet, but her regression has ceased and her illness will slowly begin to recur in the next few months. Perhaps the cold of winter is contributing this time?
8th Hammer, 1352: Aeili was resurrected from death, effectively resetting her genetic illness because of the powerful conjurative effects of its healing magic.

[Update 13/12/2015] Aeili discovered that her recently-made Elistraeean friend, Drathyrra, was not willing to return from her goddess' realm after her decease. Aeili was shattered by this news.

[Update 20/12/2015] Aeili was slain on 20th Nightal, 1351 after sharing her life-force with Dawnknight Eldarian in order to ensure the defeat of The General.

[Update 08/01/2016] Aeili was resurrected successfully on the 8th of Hammer, much to the appreciation of her friends and of Charraj. The powerful healing magics of the Resurrection spell have, for now, left Aeili in a stable, healthy condition, although the strain of having returned from the dead does wear upon her.

[Update 10/04/2016] Aeili and Charraj split up some months ago and the two have hardly seen each other since. What limited contact they have had has been nothing less than awkward.

[Update 10/04/2016] Aeili was somewhat distressed by the news of Celestia's passing away in the depths of the Underdark. Together with some of the other elves of Doron Amar she was able to locate her body and see that it got returned to the relative safety of the surface. Aeili then refused to resurrect her because of the moral quandary she felt about it.

[Update 10/04/2016] Aeili was incredibly proud to welcome Mili as the newest member of the Temple of Mystra. She is now tutoring the teenager in the Mystran faith and wizardry.

[Update 27/04/2016] Aeili and Mili both departed Baldur's Gate together by ship. Where they were going or for how long, only time would tell.

The Makings of a Mystran

Chapter 1: Leap of Faith

Long golden locks of rain-drenched hair battered wildly in the ferocious gale. The rain belted sideways against her cheeks; her hood was useless in this storm. It flapped haplessly against her neck collecting nothing except the rain and the wind. There was no part of her that was not saturated. Pale green eyes peered off into the distance but were only disappointed by the endless torrent falling from the sky. She looked down and took her hand out of her robe.

"I still have it. Good."

She suddenly jumped back startled as an enormous branch crashed behind her.

"No! Where is it? No!!" she screamed in her mind. Its dull glow began to fade. She bent down and looked under the branch.

"Where is it?!"

She threw her hands at the grass and swept it this way and that. At last its pale glow presented itself to her eyes. She reached out and took it once more, the feeling of intense relief once again descending upon her. She placed her hand back into the safety of her robe and continued up the path, urgency once again directing her hastened feet. At last she had exited the gully and made her way into the clearing. She stopped.

"There's no turning back after this," she thought to herself and brushed aside a straying clump of rain-soaked hair. She looked around. Her gaze became fixated on the large stone circular ring protruding from the platform in the clearing. It was entwined with living vines thicker than a pegasi's torso, each one firmly grasping and holding the stone ring in place. Before it stood a simple stone pedestal with a single round groove carved into it. A bolt of lightning crashed to her left with a deafening bang. She fell over and began to clutch at her ears.

"Rise, my daughter. It is time." The words rang clearer in her ears than they had at first. An invisible force surrounded her and gently helped her to her feet.

"Thank you, my Lady," she whispered in reply. The pain in her ears subsided.

Her eyes turned towards the pedestal and she quickly made her way towards it. She took her hand out from her robe once more and paused, looking at it. She shook uncontrollably as the bitter chill swept across her, her face pelted by the endless rain. She stretched her hand forth and placed it over the groove. She paused again.

"This is it."

Her hand squeezed tightly in momentary hesitation.

"Come."

She let go. The wardstone fell into place and the stone ring erupted in a burst of magical energy.

"It is done. Come now my daughter, the portal is open for you." Those words were soothing. Inviting. Exhilarating.

Aeili turned about and gave one last look through the clearing. Then she pulled up her hood and jumped into the shimmering matrix. Upon her lips were her final whispered words to her homeland.

"Until our stars align once more, O Evermeet."

Chapter 2: Aillesel Seldarie

It was a warm and sunny spring equinox that greeted the agonising cry of the Priestess of Sehanine. Her husband sat anxiously by her side and gripping her hand tightly as the pangs of birth pressed upon her more and more.

"Just one more push, Lady Ilyyela," came the whispered encouragement of the midwife.

Priestess of Sehanine Ilyyela responded with a long, intense moan of pain. Her face was red and clammy with sweat, her teeth clenched tight. It was enough. One of the midwives cooed with excitement as she lifted the child into the air while another took up a ceremonial knife with which to slice the umbilical cord. High Enchanter Tannivh looked up in excited expectation, his eyes now fixated on the little bundle of red held in the safe arms of the midwife.

"You have a girl!" came the jubilant reply as the little mouth sucked in her first taste of Evermeet's air.

"Aillesel Seldarie!" came Tannivh's exalted reply and he leant over and kissed his now relieved wife on a sweaty cheekbone. He stood and lifted his arms in a sign of reverence to the Elven pantheon.

"Our house lives on!" he exclaimed with a loud voice that carried far down the hallways of the blue and green tower in which they resided. He watched intently as the child was washed clean with a towel and fragranced water and was then clothed in a noble infant's gown of blue and red silk with the house insignia of a red swan sewn on the front. He took the infant in his arms and stared at her in quiet admiration. Turning, he set the child down in her mother's arms for the first time, grinning widely with inexpressible joy.

"Ai armiel telere maenen hir," he said to her in a soft, soothing voice, the expression of his love resounding in the words dancing off his tongue. "You hold my heart forever," he repeated again and gazed once more at the now crying child in her arms.

Ilyyela gazed softly at her daughter, her heart skipping with exuberance.

"What will you name her, my beloved?" came Tannivh's important question. Ilyyela looked towards the midwives who were now preparing for the afterbirth and then back at her daughter. She then rasped her reply in a dry, exhausted voice.

"As the Seldarine has saved our house with your coming, so too will you save others with yours. Aeili shall be your name, my daughter. Aillesel Seldarie!"

The priestess gave a weak smile and kissed her daughter on the forehead, not yet realising the true meaning of her blessing that day.

Chapter 3: Prodigy

"What is this you have done, my daughter?" came the astonished exclamation of the learned enchanter. He looked on as the young elf gently tossed balls of light from one hand to another, letting some remain floating in the air while others zipped from hand to hand.

"I watched you, father. They looked like so much fun!" the golden-haired elf chirped back. "So I just copied what you did!"

"Hrrm, well. . ." came the enchanters gruff grumble, a rather vain attempt to conceal his amazement at his six year-old daughter. "Magic can be dangerous, my daughter, when put in the hands of an inexperienced youngling," he continued, and then swept the dancing lights away with a fluid wave of a dispelling abjuration.

Aeili sighed and let out her instant voice of protest. "But father. . !"

"No, no more today," he interrupted sternly. "Magic is not just a children's plaything, my daughter. It has power, real power. In its grasp is life or death, and when used without instruction it is dangerous. Now go to your mother and help her tend to your brother," he ordered her and folded his arms.

The ever so obedient child immediately nodded, albeit the pangs of delight she had felt in her heart at the casting of her first spell had been ripped clean out by her father's stern demeanour. She took to the spiral stairwell and scooted up to the upper part of the tower to the nursery where her mother was tending to her little brother. The eight-month old was laying down upon his belly gurgling and drooling as he attempted to stuff various toys into his mouth while his mother sat a few yards away reading a leather-bound book.

"Mother, I cast my first spell!" Aeili exclaimed as soon as she came in. She hoped her mother's response would be far more supportive of her endeavour than her father's had been.

"Oh, Aeili, that is wonderful! How did you learn so quickly!" the priestess of Sehanine announced with that motherly tone of supportive accomplishment.

"I copied what father does and it made four globes of light in my hands!" she announced as loudly and plainly as only a child can.

"And your father scolded you, didn't he?" came the gentle reply.

Aeili's eyes dropped. "How could she have possibly known that?" she thought and then returned her emerald-turquoise gaze to meet her mother's.

"Do not worry, my sweet Aeili. We both have our plans for you but you are still a bit young to fully understand what you are doing. Be patient and everything will become clear to you in time, just like the stars do when the clouds make way for them to sparkle in the crisp darkness of the night."

"Yes mother," the little girl answered with a smile and a nod in her childish obedience, her heart once again welling with eager expectation, desirous to have her next magical experience.

Chapter 4: Summer Solstice

A bright Kythorn morning greeted the young elfess as she rushed from her room and down the stairs of House Azenci's tower. The faint smell of cassia and chrysanthemum filled the springtime air which filled the spritely elf's lungs as she burst outdoors in a fit of glee. It was the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, and Aeili sure knew it.

"It's the day, it's the day!" the twenty year-old exclaimed loudly for all her neighbours to hear. A few of them craned their necks out of their windows and doors to greet the enthusiastic youth with a smile.

"Father, it's my birthday! And just as you promised!" she called out through the doorway as loud as she could manage, leaving the rhetorical answer hanging on a wisp of the wind.

"Yes yes, Aeili, I did promise," came a warm, fatherly reply from the depths of the tower. "I have not been able to keep you away from my laboratory, let alone my library, all these years. Don't you think it would relieve me to not only have my quiet back, but see you progress in what you have loved so much?"

Aeili clutched at her heart as those delightful words met her ears. She pranced about upon her toes, dancing about the courtyard with a smile so big one would think her cheeks would tear if it were to get any larger. Her mind suddenly exploded through her mouth in a spontaneous burst of verse.

"Deeper than the heart's secrets
are magic's mysteries.
Oh how I leap with joy!
My father has promised,
and now delivered
more than a child's toy!"

"Father, I love you!" the rapturous blonde elf called once more and quickly ran inside to be met by her father's warm embrace.

"Aeili, ever since the day you stunned me by casting that cantrip I have known this would be your path. Your mother has also known, and she still wants you to continue your studies of the stars and of Sehanine's faith," he said to her, his deep emerald eyes grinning with hopefullness at what his bright young daughter would become.

"The School of Magic in Taltempla is strict, but they will teach you far better than I can, and with far less bother I suspect. And I encourage you to join the Sisters of the Sun; in fact I have requested that they meet us when we arrive there. They will be a family to you while you are away, so do not be afraid my daughter. The temple of Sehanine will be just across the road. Your mother has already requested for your tutelage in the divine art to continue there under their priestess."

The young theurge thrust herself into her father's arms once more. Despite the fact she had been waiting for this day for so long, and that every fibre of her being was enthusiastically delighted with the prospect of doing what she loved the most, it suddenly struck her just what being away from home would mean.

And with those thoughts now lingering on her mind, the two of them were whisked away in a magical flash to the city of Taltempla, where the next chapter in Aeili's life would unfold.
